John Jayson Sonnier has been a garden designer for the
past twenty-two years and has created many private and public
gardens. It is through his association with plants that he draws
inspiration for his sculpture. Seven years ago, while restoring an
18th century French garden at Hillwood Museum and Gardens in
Washington, D.C., he worked closely with master sculptor
Constantine Seferlis on the re-creation of a marble fountain.
Constantine began to teach him privately at his studio. Since
then, John has worked closely with Constantine on many
commissioned projects and has become a devoted student and teacher
of stone carving. Through this relationship they are continuing
the tradition of master sculptor teaching a classical art form and
passing on knowledge from one generation to the next. John's
styles range from classical to contemporary, often blending these
styles to create unique designs.
John presently teaches
stone and wood carving at the Corcoran Museum of Art - College of
Art and Design. He also teaches garden design at The George
Washington University. In 2002, John was accepted into the largest
outdoor juried sculpture show in the U.S.: Sculpture in the Park,
Loveland, Colorado. In 2003 John's piece "Just Jack in the Pulpit"
was choosen for The National Sculpture Society's 70th Annual
Awards Exhibit. The exhibit opened at Brookgreen Gardens in South
Carolina and closes in New York City, February 12, 2004. His work
can be viewed Creative Partners Gallery in Bethesda, Maryland and
art shows in the Washington, D.C., area.
