Primarily a landscape painter, Barbara French Pace works in both oils and acrylics to capture the atmosphere at different times of day and different times of year. Her paintings often represent quiet settings inviting reflection. Recent works explore the counterplay of dramatic geometric patterns created by light and shadow. Multiple layers of paint give a tactile as well as visual sense of the texture of rustic walls and streets.

Pace has studied at the Florence Academy of Art, the Smithsonian, and the Yellow Barn. She enjoys both studio work and on-site painting, and draws inspiration from extensive travels, including overseas painting workshops. A multifaceted artist, she also interprets the world through figurative work and photography.

Her art has been widely exhibited in juried shows, business spaces, and cooperative and commercial galleries in the metropolitan area and on the Eastern Shore, where a painting won best in show. She associated with Waverly Street Gallery in 2007, after five years at Foundry Gallery, Dupont Circle. Her art has appeared in a variety of media, including The Washington Post and on PBS.

Pace has long combined art with a career in foreign affairs. In addition to degrees from Brown University and the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, she completed George Washington University’s post-graduate program in publication design. She has been a volunteer with Smithsonian studio arts courses.
