On Myth
Mixed-media Work on Canvas and Paper by Rob Hauck
and New Work by Gallery Artists
|
Waverly Street Gallery presents a suite of mixed media paintings on paper and canvas by Rob Hauck. Hauck continues his parsimonious use of color, shape, and line to capture the personalities and stories of the capricious residents of Mt. Olympus.
The legends of Ancient Greece have often been the subjects of painters. Hauck carries on the tradition in a new way. He applies his minimalist conceptualism to portray, among other things, the Greek creation myth. In the “Gaea” series, which consists of seven paintings on canvas and paper, he uses rich earth tones arrayed in interlocking bands like the accumulation of sediment over time. Similarly, in the “Gods Series” Hauck portrays Demeter, the Goddess of the Harvest and Seasons, in bands of cool grays and whites to convey a mother pining for her abducted daughter. The “Muses” series gives us Hauck’s abstracted presentations of some of the nine Muses believed to have inspired artists, poets, and musicians.
Recently featured in Watercolor Magazine’s anniversary issue, Hauck now incorporates acrylics and larger canvases into his repertoire. The addition allows him to convey his impressions of deities and mythic stories through the use of local marks, brushwork, the palette knife, gel medium, and occasionally collage.
