Fiber Vessels by Maria Simonsson
and New Work by Gallery Artists
|
Waverly Street Gallery presents the fiber vessels of Maria Simonsson.
Simonsson’s vibrant fiber vessels present a unique exploration of the bounds of shape, form and functionality.
Simonsson is known for her expansive array of fiber sculpture forms and abstracts. Over the past few years, Simonsson has applied her talent to the creation of fiber vessels. Her vessels, which represent a new frontier in fiber art, wonderfully demonstrate the added dimension that fiber art can bring to traditional artistic forms.
The vessels are made by integrating layers of fabric and stitching with a wire armature, presenting the possibilities of a vessel in a new and unique way.
Simonsson, a native Swede, shows the influence of her background in Scandinavian art and folk traditions. Her work is held in private collections throughout the United States. She maintains a studio at the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, VA and regularly teaches fiber sculpture workshops at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
